"2014, an atypical vintage, a parenthesis in the life of a wine grower!”

What can we learn from this vintage? It is difficult to compare it to any other, as the growing season was atypical and the ripening period was equally unusual and surprising. Let’s look back at a very intense September, which made 2014 such an atypical vintage. The weather conditions in September could not have been better. High temperatures and fine weather enabled the grapes to reach good phenolic maturity in the skins and pips. In terms of the Northern Crus, the Syrah produced very well-coloured, powerful and meaty wines. The acidities on the whites provided the tension we wanted, with pH readings of 3.3-3.4. The Ermitage whites can already be considered "great classic" white Ermitages: very mineral and well balanced.

In the Roussillon region, the harvesting kicked off a week later than in Tain. The temperatures recorded from the 1st to the 22nd September, were as high as 32°C and there was no rainfall. The grapes ripened at their "normal" pace, later than usual, but the outcome was outstanding. In Alsace on our blue schist terroir, one of the latest ripening in the AOC, benefited from its late maturation. The rain-free period of ripening enabled our Riesling to remain nice and healthy until the start of harvesting on 1st October. The personality of our Single Vineyards Selections is already asserting itself: Fels - lively and powerful as usual, Buehl - meatier, and Berg - already showing lovely complexity.

Already a great vintage, the 2015 will remain an outstanding vintage, and in a few years, will become a legendary one.”

We haven’t had such a hot, sunny vintage in a long time, not since 2005 and 2003 in fact. We can now boast the exceptional, and soon-to-be legendary, 2015 vintage which, although hot, was not a heatwave year like the other two.Unlike these two vintages, we did not see the same weather conditions in all parts of our estates, and we were able to reap the benefit of past experience to make the most of the effects of the heat. In the Rhône Valley, the high summer temperatures and the meticulous work carried out in our vineyards worked in our favour. In the Roussillon region, the altitude and the proximity of the sea helped offset high temperatures giving us very Mediterranean wines. Again, the vintage here was fantastic, particularly in the Lesquerde terroir. The year, therefore, ended with exceptionally promising wines.

Tournon 2013 Shay's Flat Vineyard Pyrenees Shiraz, 94 points
“Turns on the power by establishing and maintaining a heart of dark fruit flavour. It’s grunty but it’s also polished and immaculately well presented. Plum, mint, savoury herbs and a wave of robust tannin; it tastes and feels good now but it has a long journey ahead. Drink now to 2028”

Terlato & Chapoutier 2012 Malakoff Pyrenees Shiraz, 94 points

Terlato & Chapoutier 2011 L-Block Pyrenees Shiraz, 94 points
"It’s flashed with white pepper, roasted nuts and clove notes and comes complete with kirsch and truffle fruit/weight/complexity. It’s all quite fascinating. It’s a relatively small wine with a big personality; it’s a wine to provoke comment. The 2011 vintage is a kind of lesson for us all; many of the best, or memorable, or affecting are sprung from difficulty. This wine makes you ponder such things, anyway. Drink now to 2020"
